Every year on January 1st, people always pick a goal to focus on the next year. Today, you see a flurry of updates people shouting their goals through status updates. I will eat better this year. A month later you’re on your 8th oreo and the sentiment and will power from the start of a new year becomes an intention instead of an action. For me, the new year doesn’t represent any renewal or really generate any sentiment. Every day is a new day and I’m never sure when I wake up in the morning if it will be my last day.
I do encourage those of you to stick to your resolutions and find the will power to follow through.
If I could change one thing in 2012, it would be my wish that more people would travel. Those of you who find yourselves stagnant, unsatisfied, or bored get a passport. Travel. Meet people. Simply “do.” Get in your car, get on a bus, get a backpack and hitch hike across your state. There is a huge misconception that traveling requires a car or lots of money. It really doesn’t and I have found the most interesting trips I have been on I left with no plan, no place to sleep, sometimes no transportation, and no food. When you wake up at midnight and can’t sleep, get in your car. Go sit at a truck stop and watch TV with truckers in the middle of the night. Go drive to the beach and sleep in your car because you feel like it. Ask questions. Talk to locals. Make it your goal to meet new people and see new things, learn. Never stop asking questions. Try foods you’ve never eaten, learn about subcultures you didn’t know existed, fully emerge yourself within something foreign. Life is only as exciting as you make it. There is something beautiful in the growth you gain from others.
This world is a vast place and there is so much to see and learn. Don’t confine yourself or consider it out of your power to see and experience different cultures. Don’t stop moving.
So please, try packing a backpack with what you need and set out to do something different. See what you learn.
If you have any questions about traveling, advice on finding places to stay, etc feel free to ask me!
